Notes:
The Middle has been so consistent for its first three years I was starting to wonder if the consistency would hold it back.
I was getting nervous about whether the season premiere tonight would be another great episode or just more of the same.
It was more of the same.
Not that that's a bad thing, I love The Middle. I love the cast, I love the unvarnished look at teenaged existence and I love the style of the show's humour.
And also the show just goes down really easily, like Friends reruns.
This episode went down really easily too.
The cast delivered their usual great performances. There were slices of everyday suburban activities dressed up to be a little more ridiculous than they really are. Sue did her little scream.
And the episode was an hour, which can seem like an eternity when a show's not going well, and that hour went by very smoothly.
Something about it just didn't come together for me though. I didn't find myself laughing out loud for an hour.
I still liked it and will keep watching it (and recommending it) but I hope it hasn't fallen into a predictable pattern that sucks its energy out.
There were two great physical comedy bits: the first one when Axl is doing pec flies with the milk jugs; that was awesome and the second was when Sue is on the swing and it breaks. Classic Sue.
The episode was worth it just for those two parts.

MVP: The cast gave a great performance, which makes it hard to choose a standout but for some reason I'll choose Axl. There's episodes where he just nails his character more than usual and I can't explain why. I felt he nailed it tonight.
Best Line: "I call it the 'Summer of Sue and Dad' survey, which when abbreviated spells "SO SAD" but it's not."
Grade: A solid B.
